Understanding the Morphology of Sesame Plants in General

    Sesame is one of the important oilseed crops with distinctive morphological characteristics. In general, sesame plants grow upright with jointed green stems and may develop branches depending on the genotype and growing conditions. Differences in plant height, number of branches, and stem structure are important characteristics that can be observed to identify morphological variation among sesame accessions.

    Sesame leaves also show considerable variation in shape. In some plants, the leaves are lanceolate, while in others they may appear broader or lobed. This variation indicates that sesame possesses a wide range of morphological diversity. Leaves play an essential role in photosynthesis; therefore, good leaf development supports biomass formation and overall plant growth.

    Sesame flowers are tubular in shape and usually emerge from the leaf axils. The flowers are generally hermaphroditic, allowing the plant to undergo self-pollination. Flower color may vary, ranging from white and pink to purplish shades. The flowering stage is an important phase because it is directly related to capsule and seed formation.



    The capsule is the reproductive organ of the sesame that functions as the seed-bearing structure. Capsules are commonly arranged along the stem and are formed at the leaf axils. The number of capsules per plant, capsule size, and number of seeds within each capsule are important traits that reflect the yield potential of sesame plants. Better capsule development generally increases the possibility of producing a higher number of seeds.


    Sesame seeds are small, oval-shaped, and vary in color, including white, brown, and black. Seed color and seed size are important characteristics for identifying diversity in sesame. In addition to being the harvested product, seeds are the main component that determines the economic value of this crop, particularly due to their oil content and bioactive compounds.

    Through morphological observation, sesame can be understood not only as a seed-producing crop but also as a valuable source of genetic diversity. Each variation in the stem, leaves, flowers, capsules, and seeds provides important information for selection, development, and utilization of sesame as a promising local crop commodity.
